A grower without doubt and a nicely paced blast of Garage Rock, Pop and balladry that makes me very curious about where the influences come from. Mc5, Nuggets, 60’s pop. I just wonder has Martin been delving into his parent’s record collection and, it stuck?
Milk Maid are the brainchild of Nine Black Alps man,Martin Cohen who wrote all the songs, played most of the instruments, and apparently recorded and mixed the album in his Manchester flat.. If that’s true, it’s a fine effort that has been produced outside of a studio. He must also have very understanding neighbours!
"Dopamine." is the ‘Up’ ice breaker that kicks off the record and hits the back of the skull like a rocket as your head is filled with distorted guitars.
The album is a pace changer, prime example of which is the ballad ‘New Plans’ followed by a physch workout ‘Summertime’ and pop rock tune ‘Drag to Find’. The mellow ‘Your Neck Around Mine’ takes on a whole new shoe gaze vibe.
‘Mostly No’ follows hard on the heels of last year's debut record 'Yucca' but, carries different personal helping out. The record has a fresh feel and with this amount of material streaming forth, we can expect a complete gem arriving very soon. I get the feeling that a solid band format could just be the key, in the meantime, we await some more live dates to start with.
