My first gig of the year and, in one of my favourite intimate venues. The Junction 2 in Cambridge is a delightfully small, acoustically fine theatre and just ideal for tonight’s soundscape of a concert.

Fuzzy Lights actually hail from Cambridge itself but, should be a lot better known on the UK music scene. The band really grew into their set last night and. seem increasingly confident every time I see them. With a catalogue of fine songs that as the set progresses, just seep into the mind as you find yourself becoming more and more engrossed.

The band hope to record a new album this year in the meantime, their fine debut album Twin Feathers released in 2010 is still available as is more music on their Bandcamp site. The band’s website is here .

Lanterns On The Lake are gaining attention far and wide from their native Newcastle at the moment and the praise is well deserved.  Their debut album and eps that they are touring are lovely records. A shoe gaze ethereal soundtrack fills the venue and although this is the third time I have seen the band in recent months, it remains a rewarding experience.

Singer-guitarist Hazel Wilde made a comment at the end they did not expect such a packed house and the band as a whole seemed genuinely please to have such a quiet and attentive audience (the venue was all seated tonight).

Hazel’s vocals are delicate and when, combined with Adam Sykes spark fragile beauty. Paul Gregory’s guitar is a focal point as is Sarah Kemp’s violin which adds the depth,. (even though she seemed to be suffering some technical gremlins on the night). You really get the feeling that this band functions as a ‘whole’, not individuals and that, is what combines to make such stunning music.

A great gig to start the year. Lanterns are now supporting Explosions In The Sky UK tour, so I will be seeing them again in Brixton in a couple of weeks.
